The Uni Knot is a simple knot used to attach mono-filament line to lures, hooks, swivels and terminal tackle. It's very easy to tie but - contrary to what many anglers think, it's not as strong as other basic knots.
Many novice anglers are surprised when they find out that the Uni Knot fails at much lower loads than knots like the Improved Clinch, Surgeon's End Loop and the Palomar Knot. And yes - it is true!
The Uni Knot slips more easily than most other knots and it is not as reliable in terms of holding power. But do you know how much load the knot can withstand before failing?
The following tests were conducted with a tensile tester. All knots were tied in 10 pound mono-filament fishing line. Most of the knots didn't fail at loads as low as 10 pounds but they started slipping at much higher load values than the Uni Knot which failed very quickly under relatively low loads compared to the other knots.
Knot: Load (lbs) before failure:
Surgeon's End Loop Knot: 60
Palomar Knot: 75
Uni Knot: 10
As you can see, the Uni Knot is the weakest knot of the bunch. It's not recommended for tying strong connections - it's best suited for attaching lures, hooks and terminal tackle to mono-filament line. If you're looking for a knot that will provide maximum strength and reliability, then you should try one of the knots mentioned above.
The Uni Knot is a very simple knot to tie and it's perfect for novice anglers. It's not as strong as other basic knots, but it can still withstand relatively high loads before slipping. So, if you're looking for a reliable knot that's easy to tie, the Uni Knot is a good option.
