Choosing fishing line for kingfish can be difficult, especially in the beginning when you have no clue to what it's all about.
When you're a beginner you will mostly hear people say that in order to catch Kingfish, the bigger the better. This is just a myth and I'll explain why in a second.
If you've decided to spend some time at the catch Kingfish game, you've obviously chosen it because you love fishing. I will try to provide some tips on how to choose suitable kingfish line for your beginner's gear.
The first thing that is important for choosing fishing line for beginner's gear is- not too thick and not too thin. I think I've heard about 5 different opinions on what thickness of fishing line you should use for kingfish, but this is the most common one: It's around 60-80lb class.
The choice between monofilament or braided fishing line isn't that big of a deal to be honest, there are people who use both, so it's completely up to you. I can say though, that braided fishing line lasts longer and is more abrasion resistant, but it's also harder to handle.
As far as monofilament goes, I'm aware of people who've used 20lb one for kingfish (and other big game fish) successfully, but again- not a great idea.
You've probably heard about the braided fishing line being a good choice for a beginner, because it's more abrasion-resistant and won't break as easily. It's true that braided fishing line is stronger than monofilament, but you have to remember that there are other types of wear and tear other than abrasion. There is also a certain line memory that braided fishing lines have, which means the line will be tangled easier and it gets dirty very quick due to being stiffer.
All you should keep in mind when choosing kingfish line for your beginner's gear is: Don't go too big or too small. Choose a fishing line around 60-80lb class and you should be fine.
