A Lot of people have been wondering what the best live bait for Jack Crevalle is. Well, a lot has to do with how you're going to fish for them and where you're going to be fishing at. I'm going to tell you my "go-to" baits for catching these guys so I hope you enjoy.
First thing you need to know is that there are several places in Texas where the Jack Crevalle really thrive and depending on what part of Texas you're fishing, your best bait will vary. So this article will be broken down into two paragraphs (and I'll note which one for each) about what I think is the best live bait for Jack Crevalle.
The first place I like to fish for them is in the marsh areas, very close to the shoreline. This is where you'll find larger numbers of them and plenty of smaller ones that are fun on lighter tackle. I like to use live Shad for this scenario mainly because the small ones get hooked up very often and it's fun to see them put on a show. One thing you need to know about the Jack Crevalle in the marsh area though is that they're used to feeding right along the shoreline during high tide, but once that tide starts going out, watch out because they've been known to travel about a mile out to sea and attack schools of mullet! So when you notice the tide changing, be ready for action.
Now if you're fishing along the beach or further in-land than where I just described, you'll need a smaller bait that's not going to get into as much trouble against bigger fish. I like to use live Shrimp for this area of fishing because they're easy to cast but also reasonably priced. Another thing you should know about the Jack Crevalle close to the beach is that they usually hang out in very shallow water so you'll be fishing into or just above the mud.
